Omokoroa Football Club: Our Timeline

This timeline highlights key milestones in the history of the Omokoroa Football Club, from its humble beginnings to becoming a vital part of the community.

1993
The Genesis

In 1993, the seeds of the Ōmokoroa Football Club were sown by Tom Randles and Jerry Eaton. Their initial goal was simple: provide an activity for local kids by running one or two teams. The “pitch” was literally a paddock, requiring a tractor mow before each season! Player records were basic—just names and phone numbers scribbled on an A4 sheet.

1994
Under the Blue Rovers Banner
The following year, in 1994, the fledgling teams played under the umbrella of Blue Rovers in Tauranga, even sporting their second-hand shirts. This marked the club’s first formal entry into organized play.
1995
A CLUB OF GREEN AND RED - The Birth of ŌMOKOROA FC'
A pivotal year, 1995 saw Tom Randles leave Ōmokoroa. This prompted Jerry Eaton to suggest a bold move: forming their own independent club. Parents rallied, forming a dedicated committee and securing vital initial sponsors.

Discussions around club colours led to the adoption of Red and Green, inspired by the vibrant Pohutukawa trees found throughout the peninsula.

Administration also got an upgrade, with player details moving to a simple database to streamline registrations.

Local ingenuity shone through as Simon Priest built the first goals and old fishing nets were repurposed for goal nets. Paul Guinness took on the crucial task of regularly marking the grounds.

Building a Home
A significant step forward occurred in 1998 with the commencement of the club rooms. This ambitious project was made possible by generous donations from WOPDC, Precious Brothers, and Wayne and Chloe Wright. The construction was a true community effort, with all work carried out by local tradesmen and enthusiastic volunteers.

Within just three years of its informal start, the club proudly fielded 6-7 teams in local competition!

Wednesday Night Football
Wednesday Night Football is established by Derek Sage.   Still taking place today – rain or shine, locals get toether for a social football game that has been a tradition for over 20 years.
Ōmokoroa fc - a constant in local competition

Following the establishment of the club rooms, the Ōmokoroa Football Club entered a period of steady growth and stabilization between 1998 and 2009. During these years, the club consistently contributed approximately 6-8 teams annually to local competitions, demonstrating a strong and continuous presence in youth football. This era also saw the significant rise of Minis Football, providing a structured and engaging introduction to the sport for younger players.

A notable development was the establishment of the Joshua Woodney Trophy with Katikati FC, an annual fixture fiercely contested by Minis players from both clubs, fostering friendly rivalry and community spirit.

Around this time, the Ōmokoroa FC Originals Over 35 team is also established.

2014
THE CLUB FACES THE CHOP
A constant flow of the club’s talent leaving the peninsula for college and football with other clubs, player numbers, and importantly volunteer numbers drop.  Brett Turnwald, Dennis Cresswell and Andy Holroyd send a message to the community via the Ōmokoroa Omelette, the “club will close if there are no new members joining the committee”.

Ben Bell and Dennis Cresswell pick up the committee roles for the next three years before the committee begins to rebuild, just in time for the next wave of growth for the area.

2021
MORE ŌMOKOROA...MORE ŌMOKOROA FC
With a stable committee leading the governance and operations of the club, Incorporated Society status of the club is confirmed, and the drafting and confirmation of the clubs Long Term Plan, Club Pillars and Club Values are completed.  More people moving to Ōmokoroa sees junior numbers increase dramatically.  Minis Football numbers pass 80 for the first time – the clubs heritage crest is grandfathered for a more modern style club crest.
